Course Aims This course provides students with authentic learning experiences to acquire the fundamental theories and concepts of cultural and creative product design, and helps students develop their creative minds, work ethics and various soft skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving and creative thinking through hands-on practice and interactive learning and teaching activities.
Diversified Learning and Teaching Activities Lectures and demonstrations, visits to galleries/ art exhibitions, interactions with artists/ designers, field visits in the community, lectures and sharing by professionals, thematic studies, etc.
Professional Recognition Students will obtain a Qualifications Framework (QF) Level 3 certificate in addition to HKDSE qualification upon successful completion of the course.
- Creative Design Thinking and Methods (30 hours)
- Appreciation for contemporary design aesthetics

- Creative thinking in design context
- Elementary prototyping skills and materials (e.g. paper, paper clay)
- Contextual Design Solutions (30 hours)
- Consideration for functionality
- Observational skills and problem-solving skills
- Designing towards a solution in response to contexts (e.g. drawing with different mediums)
- Intermediate prototyping skills and materials (e.g. wood, metal)
- Culture and Artistic Expression (40 hours)
- Storytelling via visual language, media, materials and techniques
- Aesthetics and semiotics; Product semantics
- Form exploration via different design mediums (e.g. freeform creation with clay, free digital tools such as Fusion 3D and Blender)
- Application of traditional craftsmanship and 3D printing technology
- Entrepreneurship in Design Fields (20 hours)
- Work ethics, intellectual property and related regulations in design industry
- Introduction to fabrication and batch production
- Brand image and e-commerce
- Batch production materials and techniques (e.g. mould-making, laser cut)
- Integrated Design Project (60 hours)
- Choose one of the topics: “Lifestyle Products” or “Image Products”
- Design brief and process in thematic design
- Contextual and cultural considerations
- Hand sketches or digital tools to record the design process
- Actualisation of design ideas and prototype fabrication via traditional craftsmanship or digital tools
- Verbal and visual presentation of design outcome
- Curate online presence, e-marketing and media strategy)

Employment Graduates of this course may pursue career in the design industries by taking up entry level positions at the start, e.g. designer assistant, junior product designer, junior jewelry/ accessories designer, furniture designer, product retail assistant, illustrator, startup founders, art studio founders, and business/ social entrepreneurs.

Students are required to attend a group interview or an online interview/ assessment. Selection is based on student’s interest in design, motivation and willingness to learn, aptitude, drawing and design-related skills as well as communication skills.
$20,100 (Course fee is fully subsidised by the EDB.)
