Students’ Summer Holiday Organic Farming Experience
Pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture. However, multiple studies have pointed out that only 1% of total pesticides are effectively used to control insect pests on target plants, with the remaining 99% dissolving into the soil and water sources, which also reduces the number of bees. You might be wondering why organic farming is important and what the relevance of bees is to this subject.
As plants are at the bottom of the food chain, the human food shortage will only intensify without pollinators like bees to facilitate plant reproduction. Organic farming, on the other hand, produces crops with conservation and sustainability in mind, coexisting harmoniously with nature.
During the summer holiday, students of Food Technology and Nutrition visited the HKFYG Organic Farm located in Pat Heung, Yuen Long. They had the opportunity to experience organic farming in the cornfield, learn more about the characteristics of different crops, the principles and techniques of organic farming, and understand the importance and industry development of organic agriculture.
